Cafeteria’s “Soup of the Day” Becomes Weekly Roast Battle
In a novel twist on lunchtime entertainment, Memorial High’s cafeteria introduced a “Soup of the Day Roast Battle”–inviting students to sample the daily broth and then verbally roast its flavor profile on an open mic. The challenge: deliver your best comedic critique–kindly–before grabbing a tray.
First up, “Chunky Tomato Tortilla Soup” ignited barbs like “It’s tomato with trust issues,” and “I tasted a tortilla chip once, or was it a sympathizer?” Judges–volunteer junior comics–awarded points for creativity, delivery, and genuine palate analysis. Winners earned “Roaster’s Spoon” trophies and priority access to the salad bar.
The event has become so popular that the Culinary Club now pre-announces soup options on Instagram, prompting poetic hot takes and taste-testing duels. One drama major even recruited stage-hand volunteers to simulate soup-related tragedies–complete with theatrical sniffles and comedic pacing.
While nutritionists praise the engagement, some argue it “roasts” lunch rather than the menu. The cafeteria counters with, “If you can roast our soup, you can appreciate our stew.” And for those who prefer to skip the roast? There’s always the baked potato bar–untouchable by mic.
