School Nurse Installs Zen Garden For Emotional Splinters
The Memorial High nurse’s office has taken a tranquil turn after Nurse Claudette introduced a full Zen garden in the waiting area, claiming most student complaints are “just emotional splinters disguised as twisted ankles.”
Students now rake tiny sand paths and whisper their ailments into polished stones before being handed either tea, a Post-it note of gentle truths, or a permission slip to cry in the janitor’s closet. “It’s medicine for the soul,” Claudette said while misting aloe plants and burning sage.
The new treatment protocol includes breathing exercises, humming your locker combination backwards, and spending five minutes naming all your anxieties after woodland creatures. One sophomore named his plantar fasciitis “Kevin the Moose.”
Medical outcomes are mixed. While Band-Aid usage is down 74%, requests for “empathy ice packs” have surged. “Sometimes all they need is a warm compress and a mildly sarcastic haiku,” Claudette added.
Students appear soothed. “I came in for a nosebleed and left knowing I’m not my GPA,” said junior Marina F., holding a healing crystal and a tiny rake.
Claudette has requested funding for a koi pond and a roving therapy goat named Brenda. The PTA is cautiously supportive, provided the goat wears a bell labeled “Emotional Support Only.”
