Career Counselor’s AI Bot Recommends Students Become Influencers
Memorial High’s fresh “CareerMatch AI” pilot program took a surprising turn when its algorithm–trained on LinkedIn, TikTok metrics, and last year’s yearbook quotes–began advising 72% of students to pursue careers as social media influencers. Recommendations ranged from “Pet Lifestyle Vlogger” to “Extreme Room-Decor ASMR” specialist.
Guidance counselor Mrs. Keane, monitoring the roll-out, was startled by a junior pre-med student told to “Post dissected sneakers on Reels,” and a budding engineer encouraged to “Unbox your lab equipment” on TikTok. Students responded by crafting impromptu audition tapes and pitching “classroom-day-in-my-life” clips to the AI bot.
The district has ordered an ethics review: while influencer careers are valid, a balanced algorithm should also highlight traditional paths. Meanwhile, the AI’s developer team is retraining the model to include “STEM researcher,” “educator,” and “nonprofit strategist” in its top five suggestions.
For now, Memorial High is the only school where every student aspires to monetize morning routines–proving that in the age of algorithms, even college-bound seniors can’t resist the call of the content creator.
