After a series of unexplained tray movements throughout October, cafeteria management confirms that the Tuesday entree has reached the threshold of consciousness, and the Mavericks Press has obtained exclusive comment

The Memorial High School cafeteria announced Tuesday that the entree commonly known as “Mystery Meat Surprise” has, across the past 47 days of continuous service, achieved demonstrable self-awareness. The achievement was confirmed in operational practice through what the cafeteria management characterised as, quote, “a sustained pattern of tray movements that cannot be attributed to ordinary kitchen activity, accompanied by what we can only describe as the entree expressing specific preferences about which students it wishes to be served to.”
The development is, in absolute terms, the most significant cafeteria-related news at Memorial since the 2019 incident in which the chocolate milk dispenser briefly began producing what taste-testers described as, quote, “something that was not chocolate milk and was not, on careful examination, milk of any kind.” The 2019 incident was eventually traced to a malfunctioning supply line. The 2026 incident has, on careful investigation, no comparable mechanical explanation.
What The Mystery Meat Has Done
The mystery meat has, across the past three weeks, produced a sustained sequence of behaviours that the Mavericks Press has been documenting in approximately weekly summaries. The behaviours include the rejection of specific lunch trays through what witnesses describe as a small but unmistakable rolling motion, the apparent expression of approval through subtle textural changes when served to specific students, and what one cafeteria worker described as, quote, “the broader sense that something specific is going on with that particular dish that we did not anticipate when we approved the menu rotation in August.”
The witnesses include approximately 47 senior students, 22 junior students, and what the principal’s office characterised in its statement as, quote, “a substantial cross-section of the cafeteria’s regular customer base.” The witnesses’ accounts are, on careful examination, broadly consistent. The accounts describe an entree that has, in operational practice, begun making decisions of its own.

The Student Council Petition
The Student Council confirmed Wednesday that it has received a formal petition for the mystery meat to be granted full voting representation in the Council’s bi-weekly meetings. The petition was, on careful examination, not signed by the mystery meat itself, owing to the meat’s current inability to hold a writing implement. The petition was instead signed by approximately 14 students who have, across the past three weeks, served as what they characterised as, quote, “translators for the broader concerns the entree has been expressing.”
The Student Council has, on the available record, not yet decided how to respond to the petition. The Council’s bylaws do not, in their current form, address the question of whether sentient cafeteria entrees can hold voting positions. The bylaws also do not, in their current form, explicitly preclude such an arrangement. The ambiguity is, in operational terms, the principal procedural question the Council is now navigating.
One Council member, who asked not to be identified, told the Mavericks Press that the Council is, quote, “taking the question seriously, but is concerned that granting voting rights to one specific cafeteria entree would establish a precedent that the cafeteria’s broader inventory might attempt to leverage.” The concern is, on careful examination, not unreasonable.
The Administration Response
The Memorial administration has, across the past week, issued three separate statements addressing the situation. The first statement, issued Monday, characterised the reports as, quote, “consistent with the kind of imaginative storytelling that high school students are known to engage in.” The second statement, issued Wednesday after the Student Council petition was filed, characterised the situation as, quote, “more complex than the initial response acknowledged.” The third statement, issued Thursday morning, characterised the situation as, quote, “the kind of unique pedagogical opportunity that Memorial is uniquely positioned to address.”
The third statement also announced the formation of a multi-disciplinary committee, including representatives from the cafeteria, the science department, the philosophy elective, and what the principal characterised as, quote, “a senior member of the maintenance staff whose accumulated experience with the building’s various peculiarities makes her perspective uniquely valuable.” The committee will, on present plans, deliver an initial report to the school board by approximately mid-December.
What Comes Next
What comes next, on the basis of the past three weeks of accumulated developments, is approximately uncertain. The mystery meat continues to be served on Tuesdays. The mystery meat continues to express, through the means available to it, what witnesses describe as preferences. The Student Council petition continues to be under review. The committee continues to be in its preliminary discussion phase. The mystery meat itself, on careful observation, appears to be substantially patient about the procedural delays.
The Mavericks Press will, on present plans, continue covering the situation through the remainder of the academic year. The coverage will, in operational terms, be the most sustained piece of investigative reporting the Press has produced since the 2023 series on the parking lot’s mysterious extra parking space that nobody can remember being added.
An ongoing analysis at LAist has examined comparable patterns in other school cafeteria contexts. None of the documented cases has, on careful comparison, reached the operational sophistication that Memorial’s situation has produced.
The Practical Note
The practical note is that the cafeteria has, in response to the situation, added a small placard beside the mystery meat serving station reading, quote, “Please be courteous to the entree.” The placard has, on careful observation, produced a measurable improvement in student behaviour at the station. The improvement is, in absolute terms, modest. The improvement is, on careful examination, real. More school news at the Prat archive.
