The Memorial High art wing exploded with color last month as students unveiled projects ranging from macaroni mosaics to neon-painted mannequins. The Photography Club trotted out their “Urban Decay Elegance” series–grainy shots of abandoned lockers transformed into avant-garde backdrops–while the Creative Writing elective offered haiku installations on bathroom stalls, each line more emotionally volatile than the last.
In the main gallery, sophomore painter Lily Chen’s portrait of “Mascot Maverick as Renaissance Warrior” drew gasps and guffaws alike: a proud horseman wielding a paint-splattered lance and sporting a foam-rubber helmet. Nearby, the sculpture class unveiled a tribute to cafeteria tray architecture–a gravity-defying stack of trays welded together with cafeteria glo-glue and student swagger.
The highlight, however, was the Collaborative Mural “Maverick Metropolis,” where every club contributed a square tile. The result is a psychedelic cityscape featuring marching band instruments sprouting wings and sports balls doubling as hot-air balloons. Art teacher Ms. Rivera summed it up best: “This gallery shows that at Memorial High, creativity isn’t taught–it’s unleashed, often without safety goggles or sanity checks.”
